I think you have a good start here Adam, but might want to figure out a piece of literature to go with your idea. Overall I think you'll relate well to your topic.
If you want to write about tennis, a good writer to focus on would be David Foster Wallace, who wrote several essays/articles on the sport and its greats. Here's a New Yorker article that gives an overview: https://www.newyorker.com/books/page-turner/david-foster-wallaces-perfect-game.
He has a beautiful essay on Roger Federer that you could look at too: https://www.nytimes.com/2006/08/20/sports/playmagazine/20federer.html
You'll have to make sure that you can find secondary criticism though.
What do you mean by "the current media coverage in the US?"
Do you think you want to talk about the history of tennis or more recent stuff because I think it would be cool to talk about the history of women or African Americans in tennis.
I love this idea! It would be so cool for you to examine the history of marginalized groups in sports and maybe even try to identify solutions for sports coalitions to become more progressive based on the literature you use?
I was thinking about writing about the portrayal of minorities in novels. I thought it would be interesting to write about The Hate U Give and possibly To Kill a Mockingbird or something like that. I'm not positive yet but I think this is a super important topic.
Something that I think would be a cool topic to focus on would be the role of religion in books and how it effects the world building and motivations of characters. Some texts that I´m thinking of using are American Gods by Neil Gaiman and one of the books from the Song of Ice and Fire book series by George R.R. Marin.
For my thesis I was thinking of exploring the books/movies Forest Gump, Great Gatsby, Slumdog Millionaire or Berlin Boxing Club. I was thinking of using the theme of thriving when the odds are against you. Not sure though, any advice is more than welcome, please help.

Let's work through some of this in class.
