Texts: American Gods and The God Delusion Topic: The Evolution of Religion and the Different Forms It Takes Focus 1: This would focus on the difference between The God Delusion ´s message of the very idea of God or gods existing being a ridiculous notion and American Gods ´ message of thinking, seeing, or experiencing some aspect of our lives being a form of worship towards said aspect, making it a deity. The God Delusion ´s message stands firm in the belief that there are no higher powers, but Neil Gaiman has a different idea. I think this is a really good idea. The stigma around mental health is a huge problem in our country! I also think the term OCD is used incorrectly all the time, so writing about these books that are actually correct (or at least close to) in defining OCD.
ReplyDeleteI think that this is a really cool topic that can bring to light a bunch of issues around mental health as well as clarify, as Ayla said, what exactly OCD is and how it effects people and characters.
ReplyDeleteI think this is a really cool topic and definitely something that should be discussed more in literature to bring more awareness to people in our communities. Being able to show readers how mental health affects these characters will be very interesting
ReplyDeleteI like your idea to focus on the ways in which mental health is represented or misrepresented in pop culture. Since you likely won't find much criticism (if any) on "Turtles..." or "Monk." What you could do, though, is draw on psychological research instead as your criticism. You might want to look into the episode of "Girls" that focuses on the central character, Hannah, spinning out of control with her OCD. I think there were one or two episodes that focused on it. Lena Dunham, who created the series, has struggled with it herself and even written about it (I think).
ReplyDeleteExcited to work with you on this!
